According to the United Nations, the definition of human trafficking is:
Modern-day slavery is real. Traffickers exploit their victims in the sex industry through forced labor, organ removal and selling.
Sex trafficking, in particular, is a multi-billion dollar industry. Human beings who are trafficked are treated as commodities, bought and sold countless times.
Traffickers trick and lure their victims into slavery by taking advantage of the poverty in their country, the individual’s lack of prospects, or their hope for a better future.
The victims are then brought to the country either legally or illegally, led by false promises of work or marriage. Once they arrive, the victims are coerced into a position of dependence by their traffickers through debt bondage, violence, and/or drugs. The victims become exploited goods and are deprived of their personal rights, freedom of speech, independence, and self-respect.
